Candy is good when I am hungry for sweets. We describe a child’s obedient behavior as “good”. Gold is good because it has intrinsic worth. Today let’s look at what we mean when we describe God as “good”.
The Psalmist describes God as good in Psalm 100:5 “For the LORD is good”
God is intrinsically good
God is intrinsically good. God can never be bad. He is in a class all His own. When you view a priceless diamond that is rare and incomparable you get an idea of God’s outstanding nature. Recently people all over the USA drove for a day or so just to get a glimpse of a solar eclipse because it was so rare. Even though we talk to God daily and He is always there, He is an incomparable Person. Most things that are so rare are kept in museums so they aren’t stolen. Or valuable art might be purchased by a wealthy person and kept in their castle for a few to enjoy. But our God is both rare and costly and precious beyond belief and yet He allowed His son to be born into a woman and birthed in a cave with animals. Our God is so incredible because in His greatness, His love superceded His amazing nature to give it all away!
God is good all the time.
In contrast, we are not good all the time. Okay, that’s a given, right? We are flawed, we are sinful and He is sinless. This is why we need Him just to breathe. But even as believers who are blood bought and forgiven and righteous in His sight- we still miss it. Jesus also called God good in Mark 10:18 “And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.” In other words, God is in a class all His own because He will never not be good. I on the other hand will probably let you down. This is because I’m human and God is God. He always knows the right thing to do by you. However, we frequently as “toddleresque” children throw tantrums at his “right”. I’m not big on putting us down, but sometimes we need to take a second look at how good God really is because no one else in our life can be truly good all the time. Jesus encouraged us to realize that when He told us not to call anybody else good. We can have a good day or a good performance. But rarely are we totally walking in love and putting others first. So today my purpose is simply to contrast human from Divine good.
For the Lord is always good and ready to receive you (Psalm 100:5 Passion translation). Oh thank You my Good, good Father that you are so amazing in every way and perfect. And my heart responds to your great love and help and mercy. God, You are good to me all the time. You are good and so worthy of my worship and I offer my life to You today. Help me to be good to somebody
