Devotion about God’s Peace like a river

March 2, 2022

We know God has peace for us—but how do I access it when my body and soul are tired and the stress of decisions try to force me into stress? I was directed by God to read the words of the hymn  “Like a River Glorious” by James Mountain and Frances Havergal.

Like a River glorious is God’s perfect peace

Over all victorious in its bright increase

Not a surge of worry

Not a shade of care

Not a blast of hurry

Touch the Spirit there.

God said in  Isaiah 66:12 “I will extend peace- like a river…. “

  1. A river is a continuous supply that must be accessed. If you need a drink then you must dip in and drink of its water. If you want to ride it you have to put a boat in it. God’s Spirit living in us is a continuous river that keeps us refreshed. However, we must learn how to tap into it. Drinking is done with the mouth. Drinking of God’s Word is speaking that Word. It may be singing its words.
  2. Sometimes we have to exchange our worry thoughts and receive peaceful thoughts. I can’t experience God’s peace if I refuse to change what I’m thinking. Can we say “there’s not a surge of worry or a shade of care” in me today? Worry is thinking about something continuously. Give your mind a break!
  3. Peace is unhurried. We have to stop to recognize it. The Holy Spirit of comfort is there to comfort us, but we must pull aside to hear. We must receive the peace that passes all understanding. The hymn states: “not a blast of hurry- touch the Spirit there”. Simply, we must take time from media and work and even an overwhelmed mind to just rest and receive the peace that is in our spirits all the time.

When will you set up an appointment with the Prince of Peace so He can refill you?
