Most of us need some counsel occasionally. We have our parents or pastors or friends with which we confer. But have you discovered earthly counsel is limited? One person knows something about finances. Another person knows something about parenting. But rarely do we find someone with all the answers we need. This is one reason God sent Jesus to us!
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor.”
The Brenton version translates this phrase as “his name is called the Messenger of great counsel:” Contemporary English Version translates it as “ Wonderful Advisor”.
1. Jesus’ counsel is great because He listens to the heart
Throughout the Gospels, we see episodes of Jesus’ amazing counsel as He answers every question with perfection. Jesus is not only a great listener, He also knows the real question behind the question. Wonderful Counsel is that which gets behind the question and reaches the heart.
2. Jesus has perfect counsel in every area of life
Similarly, He knows us and what is best for us in every area. Some people limit their counsel with Jesus to spiritual things. But not only did He die for our sins, He created us and knows everything about us.
3. Jesus is a friend who understands
He is not in a hurry when your counseling time is up. He will work with you as long as it takes.
He is also wonderful because He never shares your secrets with another. He can give accurate counsel because He has lived in human skin and faced everything you face.
4. Jesus has wonderful counselor because He is God
Only God knows all and sees all and understands all. Since Jesus is God and infinite in wisdom and compassion, He will always give perfect counsel. His counsel usually comes from His Word (which is why it’s so important to daily read it). Some counsel also comes from listening to the Spirit of God and through prayer. The challenge is that we must take time to listen and wait to hear what He is saying. Inside, His counsel registers as peace or “just feels right”. Whenever we violate that peace, we usually will run ahead of God’s time or His way.
