Teams take time to develop. And hardly any time at all for relationships to explode. The more immature a team, the more drama. The Scripture has 3 simple ways to improve team relationships.
Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
1. Be Kind
How does kindness feel? It feels great! It feels like someone notices you and gives you an undeserved gift. Kindness is gentle and child-like. It is not hurried. It gives the other guy a break. Kindness helps the other guy file his music. If a team member is running late, it is kind to help him tune their guitar or organize his music.
2. Be tenderhearted
Having a tender heart is about considering the other person. It is tenderhearted to say “I’m sorry”. It is tender-hearted to think the best of the other person. It is tender-hearted to respond to texts with “I understand” or “no problem”. It is tenderhearted to try to put yourself in the other guy’s shoes and understand how you would want to be treated if the roles were reversed.
3. Forgive one another
We forgive others because we have been forgiven by God. We don’t forgive because they deserve it. We forgive because it maintains peace on the team. The way we treat one another really affects the presence of God in our services. We absolutely cannot allow unforgiveness and hard-heartedness in our music teams. They will infect the team.
We never want to grieve Him because where would we be if He decides to leave our service? So what do you do when you feel the tension? Take time to share this scripture and remind us that it’s about Him and not us. When we remember we are forgiven and have been given love to give to others, it’s just a choice we make.
