How to avoid silly prayers

May 6, 2022

Oh how many things we would not pray for if we knew God’s Word and believed it! First there are ridiculous things people pray about (or just go ahead and act without praying). I heard of a Christian man who prayed if he could divorce his wife and marry another woman. God doesn’t condone that because the very reason for marriage is so this doesn’t happen. We can’t return our spouse like an unwanted  Christmas gift after the holidays.

The best way to increase our effectiveness in prayer is to study the Bible. There we learn what belongs to us. We discover what God has provided.

The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right.  II Timothy 3:16 (TLB)

The Bible is our guidebook for life and prayer. In it are the foundations for a good life, marriage, family and nation.

There are silly prayers people pray because they don’t know the Bible. Recently I attended an event and a prayer was given “Lord be with us”.  Perhaps the intent was to acknowledge Him.  But Scripture says  in Hebrews_13:5  “for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” If He never leaves us, then we don’t need to ask Him to be with us. We simply should say “Lord, we thank You that you are with us”.

Before we pray, let’s stop and think about “What has God already promised me about this situation?”
