I have always been intrigued by the English servant system. There is such an honorable position in serving a lord or duke or some important person. I am told there are schools to learn how to become a great butler or ladies maid. This morning as I read the following passage of scripture, I thought of some ways we can better serve THE MASTER.
“The way I love you is like the way a servant wants to please his master, the way a maid waits for the orders of her mistress. We look to you, our God, with passionate longing to please you and discover more of your mercy and grace.” Psalm 123:2
1.Want to please the Master
First of all, a good servant doesn’t live for his will, but for the will of his master. When Jesus stated “not my will but Yours be done” he was showing us this heart to please Father God. Lord, what do you want me to do with my life? Why did you create me? Today, how can I please You? In my quiet time, Lord, what do you want us to discuss or pray for today?
2.Wait for orders of the Master
A productive servant will wait for orders from the master. He will not assume just because something was done a certain way before, that it would always be that way. His attitude is always one of submission. He never talks back or inserts his own opinion. This speaks to me today. Great servants look into the eyes of their masters to determine their mood and wishes and then do all they can to comply. I know this is not a popular attitude today. How often do we treat the King of kings with less than total compliance? Most of the Master’s orders are written in the Manual (Bible). Some direction is also given by the Holy Spirit who speaks in a still small voice to our hearts. It is subtle at times, but still should be considered The Master’s orders.
3. Long to understand the Master’s ways
Great servants don’t need to be told repeatedly what their master desires. They get to know the master and his ways and actually anticipate what he wants from past experience. So we also get to know our Father’s ways so we also understand Him. His ways are mercy and love and peace and joy. They are not difficult to understand. Many times we have only to ask the Father to explain His ways to us. When we discover God’s mercy and grace for us, it changes the way we extend that toward others as well.
Today, as a child of God you are more than a servant of course. But there are elements of working with the Father that still require a servant heart. Are we intentionally living to please Him and know His ways and obey His orders?
