3 Ways Christian songs admonish us

    October 12, 2020

Christian songs accomplish many things. One thing they do is admonish us. Admonish means to gently reprove us or caution us or warn us. Let’s look at some ways Christian songs admonish us as directed in the following scripture:

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.”  Colossians 3:16 ASV

Christian songs admonish us to praise and not complain

Frequently the psalms admonish us to look up, open our mouth and sing praises. This is the response to our souls which can become discouraged and complain in response to life’s challenges. “Bless the Lord oh my soul and all that is within me bless His holy name”.  When our souls are fighting our joy, it’s good to admonish ourselves and tell ourselves to praise.

Christian songs admonish us that God is bigger than problems

We all know this truth in theory. But when we face a financial or relational challenge we sometimes forget to look to God. He is the counselor and will take the care. He is also the Deliverer from the problem. Once we remember to pray and give the problem to God, He can begin working on its solution. Christian songs simply remind us “oh yeah, God can handle this….”. “God I look to You, You’re where my help comes from…”

Christian songs admonish us God’s grace is greater than our sin

Lyrics that include grace, mercy, forgiveness, love are all elements we need in our Christian songs. The distinctive element to Christian songs is Christ! He is our Savior and Deliverer and merciful high priest. He understands what we are dealing with because He has walked the earth and experienced it with you. But more than that, He took our sin and conquered it! Nothing can separate us from that love! But when we mess up big time, we have to take ourselves by the neck and shake ourselves and say “Father, I know and believe the love You have for me and receive the forgiveness You promised in 1 John 1:9.
