Devotion about worry from Matthew 6

October 23, 2021

Jesus doesn’t want us to worry about anything. Worry is like a rocking chair- it gives us something to do but doesn’t get us anywhere. In fact worry is a stress-producer that can hinder your health and for sure your peace. The basis for trusting God when we have accepted Jesus as our Savior is that He is our Heavenly Father . Let’s look at what Jesus said in Matthew 6:25, 27  I tell you not to worry about your life. Don’t worry about having something to eat, drink, or wear. Isn’t life more than food or clothing? Can worry make you live longer?

God created the carefree birds to remind us that when we watch them singing in a tree, their creator supplies for them. Matthew 6:26  “Look at the birds in the sky! They don’t plant or harvest. They don’t even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren’t you worth more than birds?” Yes, friend, you are worth more than birds!

Next, Jesus makes a distinction between believers and people in the world. God loves us all, but there is a special privilege to those who are believers. Our heavenly Father will take care of us! Matthew 6:32  “Only people who don’t know God are always worrying about such things. Your Father in heaven knows that you need all of these.”

Finally, Jesus encouraged us to live on a higher plane by  investing in God’s business. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus said “ But more than anything else, put God’s work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well.” This level of living includes our tithing to the work of God. There’s nothing that puts God’s kingdom first more than putting God’s work first. Before my stuff, I want to fund God’s stuff. And the great thing is, when we tithe and support God’s work, then God will add to our stuff  in blessings and favor and finances.

I want to encourage you today to trust that your Heavenly Father will take care of your food, shelter and clothing (your basic needs). But when you live to see God’s kingdom expanded and you fund it, there will be special blessings added to you in addition to just having basic needs met.

No worries!
