Are you taking a sabbath rest every week?

December 25, 2020

My family observed the sabbath- Sunday was church day. We were farmers and needed a day to rest. Even in harvest and planting season we didn’t work Sundays. Amazingly we were usually the first to finish and were never late and our crops were successful. God planned a day of rest from the beginning by His own example of creation when He rested day 7 after creation. Let’s look at the commandment.

Exodus 20:8-10 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work”

It is so funny that human beings were given the privilege to rest. God knows how He made our bodies and that they need rest. But our souls need a break too. And most importantly our spirits need a day to be devoted to hearing the Word of God and worshiping Him and spending time with family and friends. So why do we try so hard to cram another thing in this day off? The sabbath is a day to rest and pray and listen to God- not catch up on more work. When we give God our first day, He can make the rest of the work week become more productive. Trust Him!

“Accept the day as a gift of love, not as a bond of slavery” (page 198 Lockyer “Names and Titles in the Bible”) I really like that interpretation. It’s not a legalistic thing, but rather a gift from God. So I encourage you to join with me in making the sabbath God’s date with you. I need Him and want to give Him first place in my week. When Sunday is a day of your work week then find another day to rest from the usual. We all need it!
