Holidays without stress?

December 22, 2020

Some people love the holidays and others endure them. Granted, there’s the extra food preparation and guests. But my guess is the big thing is dealing with family and conflict.  The good news is that Jesus gave us what we need- His peace. The deposit of peace is made in our hearts, but it is our choice to respond in peace that actually affects the world in which we live. Let’s look at 2 different translations of this scripture in which Jesus is directing his disciples.

“Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourself to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.” John 14:27 Amp

“I am leaving you with a gift-peace of mind and heart! And the peace I give isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives” John 14:27 TLB

Being disturbed and agitated is a choice.

If it wasn’t a choice, then Jesus wouldn’t be giving us the direction to stop allowing it. Somehow we forget when the temptation comes through a circumstance or person, that we don’t have to take the bait to respond. Usually emotions and even reasoning react.

Responding in fear and intimidation are also choices.

Once we recognize our own weak spots, it’s easier to begin to reinforce them. Remembering that God is our Provider and speaking the truth “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” helps a lot.

This holiday season you will probably face stress and extra family. Keep these scriptures before you and recognize Jesus gave you peace that is stronger than any agitation or person who may irritate you. Love is stronger than hate. Peace is superior to stress. Draw upon the deposits within you and choose the response that will pay you and everyone else rich dividends this season. Peace, peace, peace….
