If your family is anything like mine, there is great diversity. We drive different cars, like different music, read different books and have different hobbies. But what unites us is that we are born into the family and we belong to a bigger group than me.
The Christian family is much the same. We have different denominations and different music and different books we read and ways we worship may differ. But we are one family who believes Jesus is our Savior and have accepted Him personally. I have had the privilege to work in many different churches from many denominations and I have learned something important from each group. We are much more similar than we think about things that really matter.
When Paul wrote to the Philippians, he said this:
“So I’m asking you, my friends, that you be joined together in perfect unity- with one heart, one passion, and united in one love. Walk together with on harmonious purpose and you will fill my heart with unbounded joy.” Philippians 2:2 The Passion Translation
Even the early church had plenty of diversity and opportunities to divide around theological differences. But really, we are one family. I believe that when believers walk together in purpose it pleases God as much as it pleases a parent when his children get along.
- One heart- is to please God and live for Him.
- One passion is to share His love through word and deed to people in our world.
- One love is for Jesus and His Word and our purpose to love people with God’s love.
This week, no matter who you meet- instead of looking at how different another believer is from you, look at how the same we all are! And when we meet a person who hasn’t yet received Jesus- just introduce them to Him!
