Are you waiting on God or is God waiting on you?

June 7, 2022

We have all had to wait for the things that are in our hearts to come to pass. When I was very young I thought that as soon as I saw the plan of God for my life it would begin right then. My experience has taught me that some things incubate for many years before they are ready to be born. Just like different species are pregnant different amounts of time, so our dreams and goals and plans each take a different amount of time to gestate before they are ready to birth.

But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. It if seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day! Habakkuk 2:3 TLB

Few overnight successes

Many people who are an amazing success didn’t get there overnight. Winston Churchill failed in obtaining a public office multiple times before becoming Britain’s prime minister. Yet, when the world needed his leadership, he was there.  Abraham Lincoln lost many elections for office before winning the presidency when our nation needed his leadership during the Civil War. I imagine if we could talk to these statesmen, they may have had the dream of leading their country all their lives. It seems their entire lives prepared them for this term of office. Yet it didn’t come to pass until they were ready and the nation was ready for them. Many times our dreams include others and their choices. I remember one minister sharing a dream for women’s ministry that took 20 years to come to pass.

Being content in the wait

I take exception with some who say we are waiting on God’s timing. In some cases this may be true. But many times God is waiting on us to grow up or to dig deeper.  What I do know is that during the waiting times the more I praise Him and thank Him that He is working the vision in me and for me and with all those involved, I grow more content and trusting. God wants us to be happy in the wait. The dream is our goal. But God’s goal sometimes is in the character growth as you wait. Keep yourself positive and never let the dream fade. Just enjoy the journey as you travel. You might be surprised at who and what you could miss if you don’t!

Questions:

  • What is the dream that has not come to pass?
  • Have you asked God to show you how you may be holding up its progress?
  • Are you continually holding the dream in your prayers and praise?
  • Are you enjoying the journey or just frustrated at the wait?
